Introduction
The MOSS pilot plant, located in Esbjerg, Denmark, represents a pioneering achievement as the world's first thermal energy storage facility. Capable of storing green electricity in molten hydroxide salt at temperatures up to 700 degrees Celsius.
Supported by the Energy Technology Development and Demonstration Program (EUDP), MOSS boasts a strong partnership including Alfa Laval Aalborg, KIRT X THOMSEN, SULZER, Seaborg, Aalborg University, Energy Cluster Denmark, Hyme Energy, and DIN Forsyning from Esbjerg.
Developed by Hyme Energy in collaboration with these esteemed partners, the technology has recently commenced operations. In the long term, MOSS is poised to make a significant impact on the energy transition by empowering industries and utility companies to replace fossil fuels with green electricity for heat and steam production. This advancement promises to play a crucial role in reducing global energy consumption and CO2 emissions.
Challenge
The green transition is a collaborative effort, requiring strong alignment and communication. We have been actively involved in shaping the project's visual journey from concept to pilot plant. Each phase demands a unique approach to share essential information with project partners, investors, politicians and other stakeholders.
Solution
PHASE I — Research and concept
During the first phase, our goal was to clarify the concept and attract investors, bringing the idea to life and making it tangible. To achieve this, we developed a comprehensive solution that includes product storytelling, a new use case, a pitch deck, and an investor animation. Our visual designs and concepts have been shortlisted for the prestigious Danish Design Award 2021 in the 'Visionary Concepts' category and the Index Award 2021.
Phase II — Brand creation and communications
After securing successful investments, Hyme was launched as a spinoff from Seaborg Technologies, the company that led the project in its first phase. Our main contribution was creating clear brand communications. These are some of the snapshots from the Hyme web page.
Phase III — Deployment
Supporting with realistic pilot plant images for the press release regarding pilot plant construction.
Phase IV — Opening Event and Commercialization
At the event, we “launched” the Visionary Hub, hosting a networking session where we shared exciting innovations and future visualizations. It was a fantastic opportunity to showcase the potential of the MOSS project and the Hyme plant!
Among the various forms of immersive project storytelling, we also offered a VR experience.

In 2024 project won Danish Design Award.
What's next? After the Esbjerg demo, commercialization is planned for 2026.
