We are finalists for two Danish Design Awards

Today, the jury of the Danish Design Award 2020 has announced that two of Kirt x Thomsen design solutions have been recognized as finalists within Message Understood and Visionary Concept categories.

The Danish Design Award 2020 vision is to demonstrate an exceptional view upon the multitude of ways in which design makes a difference for businesses, society and citizens.

The Blades Handbook™ - a shared lingo for the wind industry

The category Message Understood is about solutions that successfully deliver a message powerfully, simply and beautifully.

The Blades Handbook™ has been nominated based on aligning communication within wind turbine industry to enable better collaboration and understanding, as well as foster open innovation to solve blade related issues. It was designed in a way to create a shared lingo of terms and definitions backed with hundreds of elegant illustrations to communicate the complexity of the blade design, function and issues. This was achieved through 7 years of ongoing open collaborations together with more 25 different project partners.

The Jury: It is not an easy task to create a common language for the many different stakeholders and disciplines in the development of wind turbine blades. But it achieves The Blade Handbook ™ , developed over a 7-year period. The handbook is a well-developed way of communicating complex issues to a consortium and a rare example of clear, visually documented collaboration. As one juror said: "It looks more accessible than the average manual for kitchen appliances." "Pretty amazing," said another.

An OceanSky Cruise - a luxury yet sustainable airship travel to the North Pole

The category Visionary Concepts has its focus on solutions that are ‘out of reach but within sight’.

OceanSky Cruise has been nominated based on bridging the gap between futuristic vision and reality. It’s a pioneering pursuit to foster a green future of aviation and support sustainable tourism by reviving a low-carbon travel technology - airships. Destination North Pole was chosen due to possible ice loss by the year 2035, with airship travel serving as new means of highlighting the issue. While still in development, OceanSky Cruises are already selling tickets for trips to the North Pole starting in 2023.

The Jury: There is a huge market for cruises, so it is a good idea to bring back another and far more sustainable airborne solution. The design provides an experience of a kind of flying yacht and enhances the enjoyment of the journey. We see landscapes and discover the earth in new ways as we travel across it. For luxury tourists, this can be a good solution - and the company already has permits to fly to the North Pole. It would be a dream to fly in one of these.
